Introit: “Come, Holy Spirit, Heavenly Dove” Isaac Watts/John Dykes
Call to Worship:
Leader: God, Creator of All, you have called us here to worship your power and forgiveness.
People: May we receive God’s grace and love.
Leader: Though we may falter to do what is right in God’s sight;
People: God’s mercy and forgiveness are poured on us.
Leader: Open your hearts and spirits to God’s compassion and love.
People: Help us through Christ and the Holy Spirit to find peace and joy in this time of worship and through the coming days of our lives. Amen.
*GATHERING HYMN: “Spirit of God, Descend Upon My Heart” # 265
Prayer of Invocation: God of Hope, Peace and Forgiveness, we have come to this sanctuary asking for your mercy. Grant us your pardon. We have come this day seeking peace in our lives; grant us peace. Teach us how to be compassionate disciples for you. We ask this in Christ’s name. AMEN.
Let us pray as Christ taught us to pray. Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come; thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen
STATEMENT OF FAITH: We believe in God known to us in three persons: Creator of all, resurrected Christ, and the Holy Spirit, who guides and brings about the creative and redemptive work of God’s love in the world.
We believe that each person is unique and valuable.
We believe that we are called to welcome each person who is on a
spiritual journey, no matter who they are or where they are on that
journey.
We believe that the persistent search for God produces an authentic
relationship with God, one that engenders love, strengthens faith,
dissolves guilt, and gives life purpose and direction.
We believe we are a people of possibility.
We believe we have the breathing room to explore and to hear our call. We believe that God is still speaking…
*SERMON HYMN: “Sweet Hour of Prayer!” # 570
WORD OF GOD: Luke 11: 1-13 (Pew Bible p. 903)
11 He was praying in a certain place, and after he had finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples.” 2 So he said to them, “When you pray, say:
“Father, may your name be revered as holy. May your kingdom come.
3 Give us each day our daily bread.
4 And forgive us our sins, for we ourselves forgive everyone indebted to us. And do not bring us to the time of trial.”
5 And he said to them, “Suppose one of you has a friend, and you go to him at midnight and say to him, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves of bread, 6 for a friend of mine has arrived, and I have nothing to set before him.’ 7 And he answers from within, ‘Do not bother me; the door has already been locked, and my children are with me in bed; I cannot get up and give you anything.’ 8 I tell you, even though he will not get up and give him anything out of friendship, at least because of his persistence he will get up and give him whatever he needs.
9 “So I say to you, Ask, and it will be given to you; search, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened for you. 10 For everyone who asks receives, and everyone who searches finds, and for everyone who knocks, the door will be opened. 11 Is there anyone among you who, if your child asked for a fish, would give a snake instead of a fish? 12 Or if the child asked for an egg, would give a scorpion? 13 If you, then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”

CALL TO PRAYER:
Pastor: May God be with you.
People: And also with you.
Silent Prayer
Pastoral Prayer:
Loving and eternal God, we are in the middle of the summer months. We need to rest and find time for recreation, but time often rushes by, leaving us stressed and weary. We need to slow down. We know this, but we still find it hard to do. We fill our days with activities, stresses, and duties. When we find time to pray, we hope that you will wrap your compassion around us and bring us wisdom and strength. Help us to cherish the time we have with the ones we love. Make us aware of the grandeur of nature that surrounds us. Draw us to discover time for peace and rest. As we have brought names of loved ones to you for your healing mercies, remind us that we, too, need your healing love. Give us strength, courage, and joy that we might strive to be disciples who follow the teachings and mercy given to us through your Beloved Child, Jesus Christ, as we pray in his name. Amen
Choral Response: “Like the Murmur of the Dove’s Song” Carl Daw/Peter Cutts
CALL TO GIVING: We have received through God’s love and grace our time, talents, and abundance. We have been redeemed through God’s Beloved Child, who taught his disciples and us to live strengthened by faith. You have taught us to offer what we can, sharing our grace with others and your church. May our offerings show our gratitude and thanks. Amen
Offertory Music for Inspiration: All the Way My Savior Leads Me” Robert Lowry
Doxology: (Tune: Old Hundredth) #46
Praise God from whom all blessings flow
Praise God, all creatures here below;
Praise God above, ye heavenly host;
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.
*Prayer of Dedication: (Unison) Before you, O God, we offer our prayers, our presence, our gifts, and our service. We lay our gifts before you in praise and thanks for your many blessings. May these offerings continue the transforming work of your Spirit in and through our congregation. Amen.
*HYMN OF DEPARTURE: “What a Friend We Have in Jesus” # 585
Benediction: Beloved of God, you have been healed and forgiven. God has poured God’s love upon you that you may be faithful disciples, offering healing love and forgiveness to all. Go in peace and may God’s peace always be with you. AMEN.
